Pattern Review: Love Notions Leggins
For years Nut#2 hasn’t had leggings because I only allow them under dresses and tunics. We were riding bikes to school and dresses would get caught in the wheels-therefore no dresses and no leggings. But we’ve moved and our climate is a bit more mild. So I made Nut#2 a pair of Love Notions Leggins to wear under a dress I will share soon.
When Nut#2 was really little I made leggings by tracing around pairs she already had. That worked fine. But we don’t have leggings in her current size, so I decided to make up the Love Notions Leggins pattern because it’s free.
I’m not an expert on pants or leggings, but the Leggins pattern was just okay. The crotch point is not terribly pointy, but the grading between the sizes jumps all over. It’s hard to tell if the pattern has a consistent grade because the tops of the leggings don’t all start at the same place. So perhaps some of the jumpiness is just from how the sizes are nested.
Although the line drawings make it look like these are relaxed leggings, the Leggins pattern is quite slim fitting. Nut-Nut is not chunky, but neither is she a string bean. I made a size 8 based on her waist measurement and the Leggins are snug and a bit hard to get over her ankles. Now I did use 12 oz. cotton Lycra from Nick of Time Textiles. It is thick with strong recovery because it is 92% cotton 8% lycra. So the Leggins may have been a bit more relaxed and easier to get on if my fabric was a more standard 10 oz. 95/5 cotton Lycra.
There is extra fabric around my daughter’s crotch. It looks similar to the extra fabric she had in the Maxxine pants so that may just be a way my daughter’s body differs from the Love Notion Block. Nothing like making your own clothes to make you nit-pick fit!
Pretty standard leggings where each leg is one piece. I like the option for an elastic waistband or yoga waistband. I chose to make a yoga waistband hoping they would be more comfortable for my daughter. The Leggins have a regular hem, not cuffs although I did not use the technique from the instructions to finish the leg hems.
These leggings work, but I’m not raving about them. I’ll probably keep making them since my daughter can only wear them under dresses and the funny fit around her crotch won’t be visible. However, I will likely widen the ankle or size up and then grade down in length.

- Dislikes or desired changes? They have a bagginess around the crotch I don’t like. It similar to the bagginess in the Maxxine Pants. So either a drafting thing that doesn’t fit my child or a standard adjustment she needs. She also feels like the ankle is very tight.
- Sew again? Yes. Since I pretty much only let her wear leggings under dresses and tunics, the fit in the front isn’t as big of a deal.
- Would you recommend it to others? probably since they are free.
