Baby Shower Gift: Bib and Burp Cloth

Last week was a baby shower for a friend having a boy.  I made her a flannel blanket. With a car appliqued on the blanket. With the red stitching adding some interest in the plain navy blue backing.  When I bought the bright striped flannel, I knew I had this navy blue flannel from my mom’s stash.  I thought I had a couple yards of it.  Turns out, I had 2 strips of about 12 inches by like 80 inches.  Long.  So I had the piece the backing for the blanket. Then I made a matching bib and burp cloth and put a car silhouette on all three.  Top stitched with red thread. Pigg#1 got very excited when he saw it and tried to convince me we should keep it for Baby Brother.  I love seeing him so excited on his brother’s behalf.  I love the bright colors.  That baby boy will hopefully love this blanket as much as Pigg#1 loves his.  Which is quite a...

Baby Shower Gift: Shrug

Not only am I expecting a baby, but many of my friends in my church are as well.  So much of my crafting time lately has been trying to prepare for baby showers.  Fun, but I need to start making a bunch in advance instead of waiting for the day of. My friend was having a baby girl and I had a green skirt I wanted to use in the gift, but now top to go with it.  So I found this shirt that Pigg#2 doesn’t need, but is the same kind of green and decided to use this tutorial to make a shrug to go with the skirt.   My only change was to also cut up some shorts that were in the same color of green to make a straight edge instead of a ruffled edge.  Then I ruffled some of the extra fabric from the shirt and sewed a squigly design on a onesie.  And added a ruffle to the bum part.  And ended up with an outfit that looks like this.  Not your traditional pink girl outfit.  But fun.  And the green color matched something else I made to go with the outfit.  I love it when the parts of my gift actually coordinate.  Perhaps it makes up for my pathetic presentation skills.  I told you…I need to prepare ahead of time so I actually have...

Baby Life Quilt Progress

I mentioned before that I’m making a baby quilt for Pigg#3.  Here’s my progress so far.  I LOVE the way it is turning out so all the trips to Joann’s and Goodwill (where I bought a full size white flat sheet for two dollars to use as the base) were worth it.  I got the idea and tutorial for it at the Moda Bake shop.  I use the BabyWise books with my infants to help them sleep through the night and get on a schedule so this was perfect for me.  And it seems like a really good beginner quilt since there is hardly any actual piecework to it. After I bought my fabric I realized that I was drawn to the same color scheme used in the pictures.  I’ve always had that problem when looking at patterns.  I see the pictures and it’s hard for me to envision the pattern made out of a different fabric.  But I REALLy like this fabric.  Definitely boyish but still attractive with patterns and colors I want to have around me all the time.  I tried out the clear thread as mentioned in the tutorial.  I deiscovered some important (to me) things. 1. You have to change the tension on your machine by about 2 lower because the clear thread is slightly stretchy. 2. Only the top of the machine is threaded...

Tie Shirt

I’ve seen tutorials for these little tie onesies in many places and finally decided to make one to go with the knit receiving blanket and hat I made for a baby shower.  I didn’t particularly follow any tutorial because it is pretty simple, but I didn’t come up with the idea myself.  And then I thought it was so cute (and I’ve always wanted to make one for my own boy but never gotten around to it) that I cut out several more ‘ties’ so I can make a quick gift when I need it.  And the fabric came from one of Mr. Jiggs’ old dress shirts that I had to cut up.  I’m sure it will show up again in other projects because I love the blue and green combo.  They were my wedding colors.  And are colors in my kitchen.  But don’t worry…I’m starting to expand a bit.  My living room is spinach green and brown. I think it’s perfect for taking your newborn to church!  Comfy and a bit more...

CTR Boy!

Pigg#1 was invited to a superhero themed birthday party.  I’m really not into the comic book heroes like Batman and Spider man so I decided to make everything the little boy would need to become CTR Boy.  My sister has this adorable book.  I love it because it takes superheros and adds a bit more real life usefulness to it and still allows for the fun and magic of superheros. I made the cape myself.  I’ll tell more about that later.  When I find an excuse to make another one. And I got the idea for the mask and wrist things here.  Pigg#1 was sooo excited when he saw I was making ones for him too. I love how Pigg#1 was completely in character for this little photo shoot.  It probably helped that Mr. Jiggs said he couldn’t play with the RC Car until I took my pictures.  I love when Pigg#1 realizes he’ll get what he wants much faster if he does what I want first.   Is that what CTR Boy is all about?  Maybe not, but he has been making better choices...
